Invoice Due Date Best Practices: Get Paid on Time
The due date is the most important date on your invoice. Set it wrong and you wait weeks for payment.
Choosing the Right Due Date
- Same-day / Due on Receipt — immediate payment, best for small jobs
- Net 7 — one week, good for quick-turnaround freelance
- Net 15 — balances urgency with client processing time
- Net 30 — corporate standard, plan cash flow accordingly
Due Date Psychology
Invoices due "upon receipt" get paid 2x faster than Net 30 on average. Shorter windows create urgency without being aggressive.
Milestone Due Dates
For projects over 30 days, tie due dates to milestones rather than one final date. Example: 30% due at kickoff, 40% at midpoint, 30% at delivery.
Display the Due Date Prominently
Put due date near the total amount in bold. Include: "Payment due by [date]" not just a date in the corner.
